How to get more direct bookings for your homestay

To get more direct bookings, make your homestay easy to find and book outside the booking sites: a complete Google Business Profile, a phone and WhatsApp number guests can reach, an Instagram page with a booking link, fast replies, a clear price and advance policy, and a reason for past guests to return.

Why direct bookings matter

Every direct booking keeps the 15% to 25% commission a booking site would take. Many Indian guests still prefer to call or message: only about 37% of accommodation in India was booked online in 2025, according to a figure an industry founder cited from Mordor Intelligence (LinkedIn).

Ten ways to get more

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile with photos, prices, your phone number and a booking link. Read our Google Business Profile guide.
  2. Answer fast. The first host to reply on WhatsApp usually gets the booking.
  3. Have a clear price. Send the price, what's included and the advance in the first reply.
  4. Make paying easy. Share your UPI ID and confirm as soon as the advance arrives.
  5. Ask for reviews after every stay, on Google as well as booking sites.
  6. Bring guests back. Keep a list of past guests and send a short message before their favourite season.
  7. Use Instagram and Facebook with real photos of rooms, food and the view, and your contact in the bio.
  8. Work with local guides and drivers who send guests your way.
  9. Offer something booking sites don't, such as a free pickup or a meal for direct bookings, where your OTA contracts allow it.
  10. Keep one calendar, so you can say yes on the phone with confidence. See the booking calendar.
